Twitter has named Linda Yaccarino as its new CEO. Yaccarino is a former NBCUniversal executive with deep ties to the advertising industry. She is expected to focus on business operations, while Elon Musk, who is the current CEO of Twitter, focuses on product design and new technology. Elon will become the company’s CTO.
Who is Linda Yaccarino?
Yaccarino is a well-respected leader in the media and entertainment industry. She has over 30 years of experience in the field and has held senior executive positions at some of the biggest companies in the business, TNT and NBC, to name a few.
At NBCUniversal, she was the Chairman of Global Advertising and Partnerships. She was responsible for overseeing all of the company’s advertising and marketing efforts. She also led the company’s efforts to develop new revenue streams, such as subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services.
Yaccarino is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion in the workplace. She has been a vocal supporter of women in leadership roles and has worked to create a more inclusive environment at NBCUniversal. She is also a strong supporter of diversity in the media, and she has worked to ensure that NBCUniversal’s programming reflects the diversity of it’s audience.
What does Yaccarino’s appointment mean for Twitter?
Yaccarino’s appointment is a significant development for Twitter. She is the first woman to lead the company and brings a wealth of experience. Yaccarino’s appointment is likely to have a number of implications for Twitter. There are three main areas where her experience could help Twitter in very important ways.
Improving the Advertising Business
She is likely to focus on improving the company’s advertising business. Twitter is a major player in the social media advertising market, but it faces increasing competition from rivals like Meta (Facebook) and Google (Alphabet). Her experience in the advertising industry will be a huge asset that could help Twitter grow its advertising arm of the business.
Twitter UI/UX
Twitter has been criticized for its cluttered interface and its lack of features. They have recently rolled out some new features and analytics, but it’s not enough. Yaccarino is likely to work to improve the user experience and make Twitter more user-friendly. Other issues have been suggested feeds, but that’s also something that Elon has tackled since buying the company.
Growing the Userbase
Twitter’s user base has grown steadily over the years, but it has slowed in recent years. In 2017, Twitter had 336 million monthly active users (MAUs). By 2022, that number had grown to 368 million MAUs. However, Twitter’s growth rate has slowed in recent years. In 2021, Twitter’s MAU growth rate was only 7%. This is compared to a growth rate of 24% in 2017. And let’s not forget Elon’s crusade against the bots to ensure that the MAUs are more accurate.
What Obstacles Will Yaccarino Face?
Yaccarino will face a number of challenges as the new CEO of Twitter. Some of her biggest challenges are likely to be spam and abuse, misinformation, censorship (or lack thereof?), privacy, and hate speech/toxicity. Certainly, not topics to address for the faint of heart.
Right now, opinion on the move seems and feels somewhat split, a shocker I know in this day and age. Regardless of how you feel, there’s no denying her track record. And, as a wise man once said, “We will watch your career with great interest.” -Sheev Palpatine
